Glossary What does climate neutrality mean?

Climate neutrality

Climate neutral means that a company no longer has any responsibility for impacting the climate at all (e.g. no dust particles in addition to greenhouse gas emissions). Many scientists think this is impossible. Greenhouse gas neutrality is equated with or used synonymously with climate neutrality by governments and companies. This is also the case at Commerz Real.

In this sense, the term describes that a company does not emit more greenhouse gases than can be absorbed by natural sinks (e.g. forests). Climate neutrality can be achieved by purchasing offset certificates. However, in order not to be vulnerable to greenwashing allegations, this should only take place after the avoidance and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
